Roman period native farmstead near Wolf Crag, Kirkwhelpington (Kirkwhelpington)

(NY 98248853) Ancient Earthwork. (1)

A rectilinear earthwork, at North Catcherside, with multiple ramparts enclosing approximately 1 acre. The interior has been ploughed and no huts survive. (2)

A well-defined, ditched enclosure with fragmentary outer and inner banks, and an east facing entrance. The work is unclassified by Jobey, but it compares, in general terms, with either his type 'A' or 'C' (rectangular enclosures of the Roman period designated 'homestead' or 'settlement' according to the number of huts contained). Resurveyed at 1/2500. (3)
