Darney Crag prehistoric field system (Corsenside)
NY 912876: A field system, burial cairns, and clearance cairns were discovered during field walking in February 1981 on Darney Crag. The burial cairns were located at NY 91158753, NY 91168753 and NU 91328755. The first two cairns exhibit signs of retaining kerbs but the third has been badly robbed, near the east edge of the crag are two substantial stone founded sub-rectangular buildings, the most complete of which measures 12m by 5m. They have been interpreted as shielings. (1)
A series of banks are evident on aerial photographs and on the ground. Along with a series of field clearance cairns at NY 910876, they are characteristic of a Bronze Age field system. No house sites were found.
The three burial cairns reported in (1) measure: 6m diameter by 0.6m high; 5m diameter by 0.4m high, each with kerbstones visible; the third cairn is badly robbed. Two further cairns lie at NY 91188756 and NY 91188758 and measure c.6m in diameter and 0.6m-0.7m high. (2)
Assessment and survey by MAP Archaeological Consultancy in November 1999. Individual features surveyed. (3)
Darney Crag prehistoric field system, including many field clearance cairns and banks, and some cairns classified as burial cairns. Lidar imagery shows many mounds extending over a wide area, but some of these 'mounds' may be natural (some are probably just vegetation). A very important Bronze Age landscape that should be surveyed in detail on the ground. (4)
