East Woodburn shrunken medieval village (Corsenside)
Found during field investigation. A small area of crofts and building steadings, centred at NY 90608677, typical of minor depopulation. (1)
Surveyed at 1:2500. (2)
Indications of a rectangular building. (3)
Adjacent to the modern road is an area 100m east-west by 25m north-south with the remains of buildings, surviving as banks up to 0.8m high. The village of East Woodburn was a patrimony of the de Lisle family of Hallyards and is recorded in a survey of 1336. (4)
Earthworks of a square-shaped small enclosure or large building foundation are clearly visible on lidar imagery, and seven further possible earthwork features have been recorded from lidar imagery in the same field. Potentially related to the 13th-century Grange of Hallyards of the de Lisle family, but no way of knowing the age of these features from lidar imagery alone. Possibly an area worth checking on the ground. (5)
