Bingfield (Whittington)
This is the site of the shrunken medieval village of Bingfield, which was first recorded in the late 14th century. Many earthworks can still be seen, but their pattern is confused. Several enclosures run southwards from Bingfield Farmhouse to the Lodge. (1)
Medieval croft boundaries and medieval/ post medieval mounds are visible as earthworks on air photographs centred at NY 9778 7244. Two croft boundaries are visible to the south of Bingfield farm. In the field to the south of the chapel are two mounds. One, at NY 9786 7238, measures 7m in diameter and is surrounded by a narrow ditch. Other more indistinct earthworks are also visible to the north. The features relate to the medieval village of Bingfield. Broad banks (recorded within NY 97 SE 50) may define the limit of the village. (2a)
General association with HER 31702 (boundary bank), HER 31703 (boundary banks), HER 31728 (ridge and furrow). (2)
