Terraces (Whittington)

Centred NY 98707330. On the upper part of a field of strong rig and furrow, and situated on a fairly steep north west facing slope, are the remains of four cultivation terraces. Their working areas have c.150m broad, and they are 1.5m high. Their overall length is c.130m, limited on the south west by a causewayed track and ploughed out in field to the north east. Surveyed at 1/2500. (1)

(Subsequently published) Cultivation Terraces. (2)

Condition unchanged, probably medieval. (3)

Medieval cultivation terraces are visible as earthworks on air photographs centred at NY 9868 7332. The terraces are approximately 130m in length an between 17m and 22m in width. It is assumed that the width of 150m given by authority 1 should read 15m. (4a)
