Dale House and Dale Cottage (Humshaugh)
Dale House and Dale Cottage. Grade II listed building. Pair of houses, dated 1664 with initials TD ND on lintel; altered late 19th century; and later 20th century. (1)
Full description of exterior and interior of buildings and structural history given. (2)
Detailed notes relating to the interior and exterior of the buildings, identifying the roughly-cut quoins in the lower part of the south-east corner as very large and 'bastle' type. The walls of Dale House were recorded as c.0.72m thick except at the eastern end where the wall between Dale House and Dale Cottage appears to be over 1m thick and also contains a blocked byre doorway. Dale Cottage appears to be a second bastle of which the east gable end and north wall survive. The south door may represent the altered byre doorway which may have re-used dressings from the byre door of the first bastle. All except the east wall of Dale House appears to have been rebuilt in 1667. Dale Cottage was remodelled as a single storey cottage in around the late 18th century which may be the time when the walls of Dale House was heightened. (3)
