Old Mill 30 Metres North Of Haughton Mill House (Humshaugh)
(NY 92147290) Mill Ho (NAT) (1)
NY 922 729. Haughton Castle paper mill, powered by water from the River North Tyne was established 1788 and closed in the 1880s. The mill building is extant and in good condition although believed gutted. A large leat is evident and tailrace arch visible. There is a fine drying shed with cottages below (? conversion) and louvered drying lofts above. Recommended as Grade II. (2)
An 18th century paper mill, founded in 1788 by Captain William Smith. French assignats were forged here in 1793 in an attempt to lower the value of French revolutionary currency. (3)
A dam was built across the river in 1788 to provide water for a waterwheel to drive a paper mill. The building still stands. The upper part of the west wing has large openings and was evidently used as a drying room or shed. Below this building, and beside the river, still stands the buildings which housed the waterwheel and its machinery, although it is now derelict. Between this building and the dam site, iron bolts embedded in stone show where the leat carried the water to, probably, an overshot wheel.
The mill continued to work into the 19th century. It was advertised for sale in the Newcastle Courant for 3rd June 1842 and it was still working in 1855. However, by 1887 the mill had gone out of production. The County History describes the remains as, water channels and ponds beside the mill, and a small stone building on the river bank which may have contained a waterwheel. The small building was indeed the building that housed the wheel, as the bolts holding the wooden launder can be seen and the outfall arch under the building still remains. (4)
