Prehistoric remains near Hallington (Whittington)

Traces of early settlement can be seen in a series of 'British grave' on an outcrop of basalt half a mile north of the homestead of Cheviot, Hallington. A fragment of whetstone; a cup marked stone; a small mortarium; and part of an upper quern stone, all found within the mounds are in the possession of Mr R C Hedley of Cheviot. (1)

(NY 97857722) 'Primeval settlement'. (2)

At NY 9788 7722 is a level shoulder, on a gentle northern slope, which is strewn with basalt boulders. This is certainly Trevelyan's site and also presumably Hodgson's, though it is rather less than half a mile north of Cheviots Farm.
The area is generally disturbed and beside the profusion of boulders (which form no recognisable pattern) there is rig and furrow and a number of vague mounds (no doubt the 'British Graves'); these last are almost certainly field clearances and appear to pre-date the rig and furrow.
Other than the cup-marked stone, the finds (which cannot now be traced) and the appearance of the site suggest Romano-British agricultural occupation. (3)

(NY 97877723) Settlement (Antiquity symbol). (4)

No change. (5)
