Dun Crags medieval farmstead (Chollerton)
(NY 94547627) Settlement. (1)
East Green Crag. A rectangular earthwork with single rampart (Listed under Native Sites in Northumberland). (2)
Listed under rectilinear sites but unclassified. (Appendix to rectilinear settlements of the Roman period). (3)
A quadrangular enclosure with an annexe to the south-east. The internal features are fragmentary, but suggest rectangular buildings in both enclosure and annexe. In fair condition, surveyed at 1/2500. (4)
Published survey (25 inch) revised. The general appearance of the work the suggestions of rectangular internal structures and the existence of three cultivation terraces to the immediate south are all inconsistent with local 'native' sites. They are indicative, rather, of a medieval or later farmstead. (5)
NY 9454 7625. Dunn Crags farmstead and irregular enclosed field system, 950m NW of Colwell. Scheduled RSM No 20931. A main rectangular enclosure measuring 48m E-W by 43m N-S, lying within strong stone and earth banks 4m across and 0.6m high. An entrance leads into the enclosure at the centre of the S wall, where there are clear foundations of several rectangular buildings, the most prominent of which measures 10m by 14m. Attached to the SE corner of the large enclosure is a rectangular annexe measuring 26m by 25m with walls of similar proportions to the main enclosure. An entrance lies in the centre of the S wall and within the annexe there are platforms of rectangular buildings. A length of bank 22m long is attached to the SW corner of the large enclosure. Immediately to the S of the farmstead are two strip lynchets, probably contemporary with it. (6)
