Carelgate (Carlegate) (Sandhoe; Corbridge)
(NY 97676487 and NY 98346460) Carelgate [LB] (course of). (1)
Carelgate was used from medieval times till the 18th century as the main road from Corbridge to Hexham. From Corbridge, it held to the north bank of the Tyne and, passing south of Corbridge Mill, forded the Cor Burn; on reaching the north-east angle of Shordon Brae wood, it turned west towards Hexham. It was finally closed in the late 19th century. (2)
Carelgate extends from NY 964652 to NY 988644 and for the major part it has been obliterated by cultivation and tree planting. Part of the route, from Corbridge to Corbridge Mill, still survives as a metalled footpath. (3)
The Stanegate survived from Roman times and under the name Carl-gate or 'ald-he-way' continued eastwards to Tynemouth. The Carelgate led from Carlisle to Newcastle. (4)
