Prehistoric Burials (Corbridge)
Two sandstone cists containing cremations and five beakers ['B' and 'C' represented], were found near the west end of a field immediately west of the house called Dilston Plains, and some twenty yards south of the Newcastle-Carlisle road. The cists were about six feet apart, one foot below the surface and orientated ENE-WSW: there was no evidence of a mound. They have been reconstructed near the doorway of Dilston Castle [NY 96 SE 3] (1) and the beakers loaned to the Blackgate Museum. (2)
Sited to NY 9632 6396 from Gibson's photos. (1) The beakers are still in the Blackgate Museum and the cists remain immediately south east of the entrance to the castle. There are four large stones lying nearby: they are the coverstones and probable base stones of the cists. (3)
No change. (4)
