Downham (Carham)

NT 865340 deserted medieval village at Downham. (1)

No visible remains. Nothing visible on available aerial photographs (RAF 1945). (2)

Downham was a member of the barony of Wark on Tweed. 1296: one tax-payer. 1336: two taxpayers. 1541: eight husbandlands. 1580: four tenants. 1693: three tenants. Small village shown on Armstrong's map of 1769. Slight earthworks in front of the modern farmhouse. Traces of a road marked on Greenwood's map of 1828 are traceable in the field south of the farm.
