Boundary Cross (Hexham)
The base of the western sanctuary cross of Hexham has been discovered in the garden of Maiden Cross, so that now the sites of all four are known. [Illustration shows this to be a creeing trough, not a cross base. Overall measurements given as 16ins x 16ins x 15ins high. Square in section at the base, the corners are chamfered to give an octagonal shaped top which is deeply hollowed out.] (1)
NY 9274 6379 This alleged cross base is preserved in the south east corner of the nave of the Priory Church of St Andrew, Hexham. It is a typical creeing trough of no archaeological significance.
Mr W P Hedley, Hon Corr, is of the opinion that although no trace of the cross has been found, the house called Maiden Cross (NY 9277 6380) is on, or near, the site of the western sanctuary cross.
The road junction immediately south west of this house is considered a likely position and the cross has been sited accordingly. Hexham was a licensed sanctuary from the 7th century until after the Dissolution (NY 96 SW 1). (2)
