Church of St Peter (Hexham)

NY 93646409 The church of St Peter at Hexham was probably built at the same time as the Priory, between the years 674 and 678. It can hardly have escaped destruction by the Danes in 875 and in all probability was never restored. Some remains may have existed in the 12th century since Prior Richard speaks of the church, but as he says nothing of its architecture, though he describes that of St Mary [NY 96 SW 8] it may be inferred that the building was in ruins. By 1310 it had completely disappeared.
No traces of the church remain and it is impossible to identify the site. It is stated by Prior Richard to have been somewhat further removed from the Priory than St Mary's Church. It possibly stood on the east side of an open space, corresponding roughly with the present market place and facing the church of St Andrew [approximate siting from this information]. (1)

No additional information discovered regarding the site of this church. The area concerned is occupied by modern shops. (2)
