Bronze Axe (Hexham)
'A beautiful Celt which had been found in the neighbourhood of Hexham was exhibited at a Meeting of the Society' (a). A flat bronze axe head, now lost, which is not otherwise known than from the manuscript of John Bell. It was 7.1 inches long by 3.5 inches wide at the edge, and was similar in appearance to the type 1 (flat axes without definite flanges or stop ridge) of Megaw's classification (b). The axe head was decorated with herring-bone ornamentation on the faces, which brings it into group 2 of the above classification. (1)
