Burial (Hexham)
NY 91606503 A cist was found on 8th October 1921 when forming a green in Hexham Golf Course. It was found at a point about 200 yards west of the cemetery wall and 30 yards north of the road at a spot on a higher level than the surrounding ground. The cover of the cist was of one stone but broken into pieces and was found 18ins below ground level. The stones at the foot of the cist had gone. It was constructed in the usual way with flat sandstone slabs set on edge with a large slab for the lid and measured internally 40ins x 23ins x 18ins. The bones within the cist were broken and the skull missing.
The bones were donated to the Museum of the Society of Antiquaries, Newcastle on 26th October 1921, by the Hexham Golf Club, per Mr W A Cocks who appropriated the remains on behalf of the Society. (1)
'Bronze Age human bones from cist, Hexham Golf Course, 8th October 1921. Presented per Mr W A Cocks, by Hexham Golf Club.' (2)(5a)
NY 91756499. At this point are the 'scooped-out' remains of a golf course green. It is the highest part of the area and has been in the form of a knoll; but whether a tumulus formerly existed could not be accurately ascertained, as the area is considerably mutilated. The distance west of the present cemetery wall (quoted in Authy 1) does not agree with the topographical situation, and would appear to be in error.
Enquiries at Highwood and Westwood Farms revealed no information relating to the burial. (3)
West cemetery wall, as in 1921, indicated by Cemetery Supt. it falls 120m east of the find site as indicated by Authy 3 whose siting is probably correct. (4)
