Course of a Roman aqueduct (Haltonchesters) (Whittington; Corbridge)

NY 98356902 to NY 99406898 to NY 99746846. Aqueduct (shown as course of). (1)

Part of the aqueduct, running in a deep ravine to the west from the head of Fence Burn, was extant in 1832. (2)(3)

There are no visible remains of any form of aqueduct connecting the Fence Burn with the fort. (4)

National review of military aqueducts in the period notes the fort of Halton Chesters supplied by an undated stone channel and gives a bibliography of sources referring to this as an aqueduct. (5)

Horsley (6b) and Bruce (6c) note that there was an aqueduct to convey water to Haltonchesters from a spring to the NW. Lingard in 1807 found to the W of the fort 2...a species of aqueduct of large stones in which was hollowed a conduit 12 inches broad and 8 deep which discharged the water from a wet piece of ground...through the wall" (6d).
Area now intensively cultivated; no evidence found. (6a)

A detailed discussion of this aqueduct in relation to the fort bath-house has been published. (6e)
