Round cairn 530m west of Stanley Cottages (Sandhoe)
[NY 97136848] Tumulus [L.B.] (1)
Tumulus. (2)
In appearance a typical 'barrow'. Excavated by the authors and found to be comprised of stones covered by earth. On removal of the stones the undisturbed boulder clay was found but no traces of a burial. (3)
A grass covered mound 8m diameter and 0.4m high with a few stones protruding from the turf. No trace of ditch or retaining circle. Situated on the summit of a rise. In spite of the absence of finds it is considered that this is almost certainly a barrow. Situated on moorland with no trace of ploughing or surface workings there is no logical reason, other than funereal, for a mound at this point. (4)
Condition unchanged and published survey (25 inch) correct. A probable round barrow. (5)
Scheduled. (6)
