Roman cemeteriChesters Roman Cemetery (Cilurnum) (Humshaugh)
(Previously recorded by the Ordnance Survey as NY 97 SW 5.2)
Two cemeteries at Chesters can be located with some exactness. The larger and doubtless more important one lined the south westward road, 200 yards or more from the south gate of the fort in a field called the Ox-close. Bruce (a) defines the position of this cemetery as 'where the river bends rapidly to the east, and where the sunk fence defining the park of Chesters joins the river's bank' (NY 911699). Early antiquaries record the discovery of Roman tombstones, some of them inscribed, from this area.
The second cemetery was east of the river on the line of the Military Way where the North Tyne railway cut across it (NY 915700). (1)(2)
No further information. (3)
Scheduled. (4)(5)
NY 912 699 No further observations on the site of the cemetery were made in the course of the 1992-3 RCHME survey. (6a)
Located on the English Heritage map of Hadrian's Wall 2010. (6b)
General association with HER 9276 (Chesters Roman fort), HER 9337 (Chesters Vicus), HER 31643 (Roman cremation burial). (6)
