St Giles Hospital (Hexham)
[NY 92726502] The Spital on Site of ST. GILE'S HOSPITAL [G.T.] (1)
The hospital of St Giles at Hexham was founded after 1114, for poor labourers, infirm persons and lepers. After becoming dependent on Hexham Priory in 1378 it was for two poor people either at the hospital or in the priory. It was dissolved in 1537. (2)
Leper hospital founded 1200. (3)
The modern residence known as the Spital (see NY 96 NW 93) stands on the site of the hospital of St Giles, but only the name now survives.
It is said to have been founded by one of the Archbishops of York in conjunction with a prior of Hexham. It cannot therefore have been established before 1114 but was probably founded soon after the arrival of the Austin Canons Hexham.
The earliest mention of the foundation is a charter dated 1201.
At the Dissolution it became the property of Sir Reynold Carnaby and was converted into a private residence. Preserved at the Spital is a pre-Conquest cross and an image of St Giles. Illustration shows shaft of cross with carved representation of the crucifixion on one side and interlaced foliage and fruit on the others. (4)
The Spital, a modern residence, now the club house of the Hexham Golf Club shows no traces of the Priory Church of St Andrew, Hexham. No information was discovered regarding the present whereabouts of the 'image of St Giles'. (5)
The cross is now at Hexham Abbey and is of mid-8th century date. (6)
