Milecastle 25 (Codlawhill) (Wall)
[NY 9459 6940] MILECASTLE 25 [GSC] (site of) [T.I.] (1)
About a furlong before reaching the nineteenth milestone, approaching from the east, the platform and ditch of milecastle 25 can be seen on the south side of the road. Its centre is 350ft to the nearest fence on its west side (2). Excavations in 1930 found it to be 70ft wide from east-west with side walls 10 ft thick. Its north wall is under the road. (2)(3)(4)
Resurveyed at 1/2500. The remains consist of a low mutilated grassy platform, with superficial traces of a ditch on its south side. (5)
Scheduling revised on 14th July 1997, part of national monument number 26049. Milecastle 25 is situated on a west facing slope with views to the north and south. It survives as a turf covered platform about 1m high. A slight hollow on the south side may indicate an outer ditch. This milecastle was partly excavated during 1930 by Hepple. (6)
The side walls of the milecastle were built to the Broad Wall standard (between 3-2.74m wide). (7)
The platform, described above (5), is up to 1.0m high and a superficial hollow on the south side may indicate a ditch; there is no sign of a spur road. The milecastle is possibly of long axis type. (8a)
The milecastle was seen as a slight earthwork and mapped from air photographs. (8b)
Located on the English Heritage map of Hadrian's Wall 2010. (8c)
General associaiton with HER 8543 (Turret 25a) and HER 8544 (Turret 25b). (8)
