Fishponds (Blanchland)
A short distance from the abbey and on the west side of the Shildon Burn is the supposed site of the abbey fishponds. (1)
NY 96455035. The remains of three typical medieval fishponds situated one above the other on a southern slope and consisting of rectangular depressions up to 2m deep. The two to the south have been mutilated by the modern farm building, but that to the north is complete with overall dimensions of approximately 36m x 12m. The fishponds must have been fed by a spring but this can no longer be traced. (2)
