The Angel (Blanchland)
This old pub, which used to be called The Angel is now part of the Lord Crewe Arms, contains parts of an earlier medieval building, though most of the building dates to the 19th century. The medieval walls were up to 1m thick. Metal waste from the smelting of lead was found beneath the building, it is possible that silver was also extracted from the ore. (1-5)
Residues of early lead processing have been found beneath the floor level of this inn, and are Mediaeval in origin. The residues sugest silver extraction. Any structures associated with such activity are likely to be of national importance. (6a)
