Settlements and field system north-east of Burntshield Haugh (Blanchland)
The earthwork remains of a prehistoric hut circle settlement and field system lie on the western edge of Burntshieldhaugh Fell together with a Roman period native settlement. There are three hut circles on the open moorland with remains of irregular field walls, made up of boulders, dividing the landscape into fields or enclosures. Built over some of these remains is the Roman period settlement, which survives as a roughly square enclosure with walls made of boulders. Both the prehistoric and Roman period settlements and field systems probably originally extended much further, but medieval and post-medieval fields now overlie them. (1-6)
