Tile kilns at Tilesheds (Otterburn)

Garretshields: two 19th and 20th century tile kilns, Extensive quarrying nearby. (1)

Probably mid 19th century kiln, built of brick. Two small segmental-arched brick kilns in poor repair but still relatively intact, beside a range of single-storey cottages (now one house). Believed by Grundy to be the only brick and tile kilns within the National Park; based on a bed of clay in the field behind the cottages. (2)

Garretshields tilery noted in a general review of clay-based manufacturing sites in the north east of England; thought to have been working in 1860 (3). Details of the tilery by 1 now in published form - see 4 (Appendix III: Brick and Tile), reviewing map, directories and other published evidence.
