Unenclosed hut circle settlement 250m west of Woolaw (Rochester and Byrness)

32. Hut circle: unclassified. NY 818986. (1)

Three hut circles ('A','B' and 'C') levelled into the top of a north north east-facing slope overlooking the south bank of the River Rede.
'A', at NY 81849846, is the best preserved and is 10m in diameter between the centres of a boulder wall averaging 1m wide. In the north this becomes a stone revetted scarp. An ill-defined break in the east is probably the entrance.
'B', at NY 81839846, is similar to 'A' but not so well preserved and only 9m in diameter. Attached to its south side is a small enclosure about 10m square clearly defined by a boulder wall on its east side.
'C', at NY 81819846, similar to 'A' but again not so well defined and only about 8m in diameter. Much more mutilated and covered by soil build up in the south.
There are no definite traces of an associated field system though much of the surrounding area is now bracken covered.
Surveyed at 1:10,000. (2)
