Romano-British farmstead, 330m west of Rattenraw Farm (Rochester and Byrness)
Found during field investigation, a sub-rectangular enclosure situated on a south-facing slope between the 600ft and 700ft contours at NY 84719513. The enclosing feature is an earth and rubble bank, which, where best preserved, is approximately 4m wide and 1.5m high, and the internal area measures some 40m north west-south east by 30m north east-south west. An entrance in the south east is flanked by two depressed 'yards' to the rear of which are three stone-founded hut sites of average internal diameter 6m, with south east facing entrances. External to the main enclosure, and almost certainly coeval with it, are two further hut sites of similar proportions to those previously noted, and an irregular-shaped enclosure some 24m by 20m formed by a slight earth and rubble bank, and with an entrance in the south east. The main enclosure is an almost classic example of a Jobey type 'A' Romano-British settlement, the criteria for which inter alia are the position of the entrance, flanked by the depressed yards, and the presence of stone-founded huts. Surveyed at 6 inch scale with enlarged sketch. (1)
