Ridsdale western calcining kilns (Birtley)
A set of about eight stone-built calcining kilns identified from early Ordnance Survey map coverage together with an associated area of ironstone quarrying. These are not the kilns identified by Tylecote.
The kilns are relatively poorly preserved compared to examples in North Yorkshire. However, such kilns are rare nationally and these examples form part of a wider industrial landscape of national importance. The area of the kilns has recently been planted with trees. The kilns are identified of national importance which merit statutory protection. (1)
