Shotton (Kilham)
Area NT 843303 The large farm of Shotton marks the site of what must have been a considerable medieval hamlet. A Survey of 1541 states that the land had been lying waste for more than thirty years. (1)
No signs of depopulation occur in the immediate vicinity of Shotton Farm, and nothing is visible on available aerial photographs (RAF 1949). At NT 839307 a small area of hummocky ground shows definite traces of occupation and at least two house sites and other enclosures are identifiable. This may be Shotton deserted medieval village or merely minor depopulation unconnected with the hamlet. Surveyed at 1/2500. (2)
