Romano-British settlement and field of cord rig, 625m south west of Rede Bridge (Bellingham)

'NY 863826' Redeswood Law Fell, a Romano-British rectilinear settlement, one of a number partially excavated or examined c.1957 to establish type 'A'. (Rectilinear enclosures with east or south-east facing entrances flanked internally by two depressed yards, and containing anything from two to five stone-founded huts). (1)

Surveyed (25 inch) at NY 86318281. Excavation in this case appears to have been limited to stripping turf from two hut circles (see photographs), and part of a paved causeway leading from them to the entrance. (2)

Situated on level pastureland, the enclosure measures 69m north-south by 65m transversely and appears to have consisted of double ramparts and medial ditch, although the ramparts are now barely visible on south, north and north east sides (see illustration). Within the enclosure are 4 stone founded huts (A, B, C and D) ranging from 6m to 8m in diameter, 'B' being sub-ovular and measuring 9.2m east-west by 6.5m. In the north are the vague traces of another possible hut. (3)

Redeswood Law Fell, Romano-British settlement. NY 863826. A standard ditched, rectilinear enclosure with E facing entrance. (4)

West of the settlement is a large tract of cord rig and a field boundary wall. (5)
