High Town deserted village (Bellingham)

The remains of a former settlement have been discovered near Blakelaw Farm. The remains consist of house platforms, a hollow way, enclosures and field boundaries. The remains may date to the medieval period although no contemporary documentation has been discovered to support this. The remains of a post-medieval building lie nearby which was used as a source of stone in the 20th century to build another house further down the valley. Some of the remains are shown on the first edition Ordnance Survey map of 1866. (1)

A linear deserted village exists on a hill north of Blakelaw Farm, Bellingham. The area of the village is largely that outlined by the area of tree planting as depicted on Ordnance Survey maps. Within the forested area is what appears to be the remains of house platforms with associated earthwork banks indicating walls, which align with a hollow route way which clearly runs along most of the length of the settlement. There are earthworks outside of this enclosed area, including banks, enclosures and field boundaries. Research has discovered references to High Town and Nook Parish.
Lying just to the north east of this settlement and backing onto a dry stone wall at NY 84548508 is the remains of a post-medieval building which fell out of use early this century. Masonry from this building was used to build a house further down in the valley; the outlines of individual rooms are still clear. Due east of this is a mound of unclear type and further east are the remains of a rectangular enclosure. This area is clearly dominated by medieval and or post-medieval settlement. There are associated enclosures which may be for cattle. There is no rig and furrow within the immediate vicinity. (1)

The OS first edition map labels the area ' High Town' it also shows the post-medieval house, and the rectangular enclosure to the east of it is defined as a sheep fold. (2)
