Turret 29a (Black Carts Turret) (Warden)
[NY 8842 7129] Turret 29a [G.S.C.] (Remains of) [T.I.] (1)
Turret 29a was excavated in 1873. It measures eleven feet, ten inches by eleven feet four inches internally, with a three feet wide door in the south wall. Only the lower courses of the turret remain, but in the recess, the wall is fourteen courses high. (2)
The turret is well defined, with walls 0.7m high on east and west sides, but reduced to ground level on the south. In the recess, the north wall is now only nine courses high. See G.P. AO/65/157/8 for south east aspect. Published survey (25 inch) correct. (3)
When this turret was cleaned out ahead of consolidation by DoE, it was found to have been thoroughly investigated in the 19th century. (4)
Scheduling revised on 14th July 1997, part of national monument number 26052. Turret 29a, or Black Carts, survives well as an upstanding feature. It is located about 100m east of the minor road to Simonburn with wide views to the north, east and south. It was excavated in 1873 and again in 1971 before it was consolidated. Internally, the turret measures 3.45m by 3.4m and is of a type thought to have been built by the twentieth legion. The turret is in the care of the Secretary of State along with the section of narrow wall which abuts the broad wall wings of the turret on both sides. (5)
Clayton published a brief account of his excavation in 1873 of turret 29A (6b). Charlesworth found that the internal measurements of the turret were 3.45m by 3.40m and is of a type thought to have been built by the 20th legion (6c). NY 8842 7129. The turret is consolidated and under guardianship. (6a)
It forms part of a 460 metre stretch of Hadrian's Wall. (6e)
A description of the consolidation works. (6f)
Located on the English Heritage map of Hadrian's Wall 2010. (6g)
