Green Hill enclosed settlement (Simonburn)

This is an enclosed settlement of Iron Age or Roman date. Recent ploughing has damaged it. It is rectangular in shape and contains at least one possible hut circle. Nearby are the damaged remains of fields and a trackway. (1)(2)(3)

Possible Iron Age or Roman enclosure visible as earthworks on air photographs taken in 1992 (NMR NY 8272/11 (TMG 13892/52) 18-MAY-1992), centred at NY 8200 7223. It lies on Green Hill on Simonburn Common. The substantial embanked enclosure lies adjacent to an extensive medieval or post-medieval field system, with double banks to the west of the enclosure forming a trackway (see NY 87 SW 309). The enclosure may have been re-used in the medieval/post-medieval period. It has been overploughed by post medieval narrow ridge and furrow. (4)(5a)

General association with HER 31344 (ridge and furrow), HER 32211 (field system). (5)
