Hemmel Rigg lime kiln (Simonburn)

Lime kiln (disused). (1)

Lime kiln in good condition in moorland situation one mile north of Hadrian's Wall. The front face is dressed stone with stone coping - all in excellent condition. Rectangular kiln with rounded corners, partly fallen in at the top. Two tall draw arches with two eyes each. Arches partly flooded. Quarry behind. Limekiln 18ft high. (2)

Lime kiln, 800m west of Town Shields Farmhouse, Grade II. Early 19th century lime kiln. Snecked sandstone with squared dressings. Two-cell kiln built partly into bankside. Battered front and return walls. (3)

Site visited as part of a Farm Environment Plan, where assessed as in a fair condition. Trees noted as growing out of the kiln, with recent collapse and damage as well. (4)
