Haggle Rigg lime kiln (Simonburn)

These are the remains of a late 18th or early 19th century lime kiln. Limestone was burnt in kilns like this to make lime, which was used to make cement or improve soil quality. It is a Grade II Listed Building protected by law. (1)(2)

Post medieval lime kiln and associated trackway are visible as earthworks on air photographs, centred at NY 8372 7381. There is a large mound with a depression on the north side and traces of the kiln structure. The disused kiln is marked on the 1866 Ordnance Survey map. To the north is a large quarry (see NY 87 SW 265, HER 32191) , which is probably the source of limestone for the kiln as it is linked via a trackway to the kiln. (3a)

General association with HER 32191 (quarry). (3)
