Great Lonbrough lime kiln (Simonburn)

Lime kiln (disused). (1)

Late 18th to early 19th century limekiln. Partly snecked squared rubble. Tall two-cell kiln, partly built into the bankside. Battered front and return walls. Triangular-headed corbelled openings. Two rectangular pots in each opening. (2)(3)

Post medieval lime kiln south of Hopeshield Burn is visible as earthworks on air photographs, centred at NY 8232 7382. There are two quarries to the south-west, which may have been the source of limestone for the kiln. (4b)
