Romano-British farmstead, 250m east of King's Crags (Simonburn)

Listed under 'Rectangular works or enclosures of simple plan presumed to be of Romano-British date'. (2)
Tentatively classified as a 'native' settlement. (3)
Surveyed at 1/2500. A small rectangular earthwork, situated on a commanding ridge, with an entrance on its east side. On the west side the rampart is double with medial ditch, but elsewhere there is only a single rampart. There are no internal traces of occupation. The site probably represents a single homestead rather than a settlement. (4)

Site visited as part of a Farm Environment Plan, where assessed as a poor condition. (6)
The enclosure is visible on aerial photographs, but there are no traces of an associated field system around the site. (7)
Possible Iron Age or Roman enclosure is visible as earthworks on air photographs.The embanked enclosure has double and possibly triple banks in places and a smaller enclosure adjacent on its southern side. It may be farmstead, but no internal features are visible. It lies adjacent to a modern sheepfold. (8a)
