Burial Mound (Wark)
(NY 86677653 - sited from plan). (1)
A tumulus, 60ft in diameter and 2-1/2ft high, was excavated here in 1864-5. It showed the remains of a retaining wall and contained:-
An inverted urn cremation. The vessel, which was on a stone slab, had chevron ornament.
A cist with a food-vessel and a small flint knife.
Two other cists (on south and south east) were empty; the latter had a flagged path leading to it.
A central cist, set higher in the mound, was also empty; it was without coverstone which may have been ploughed out. A 'thumb flint' (scraper?) was found on top of the mound. (1)
The food vessel and flint knife are in the British Museum. (2)
There is no trace of a barrow. The site is in a cornfield on old river terrace of the North Tyne on its north bank. (3)
