Fourstones lime kilns (Warden)
These are the remains of a 19th century lime kiln. This large example contains at least four separate lime kilns. Limestone was built in kilns such as this to produce lime, which was used to make cement or improve soil quality. (1)(2)
Post medieval lime kiln visible as a structure on air photographs taken in 1945. The kiln in centred at NY 8862 6777 adjacent to the more recent 'Kiln Cottages'. The Kiln is approached by the tramway (NY 86 NE 36, HER 32384) from the quarry (NY 86 NE 35, HER 7636). (3a)
