An Early Bronze Age burial cist was excavated at Allerwash in March 1972 after it was accidentally discovered by deep ploughing, which hit the cover slab. The cist was found to be lying in an oval pit, and was made up of four sandstone slabs. There was no evidence for a covering mound or for any further burials nearby. The burial was of a young female, about 1.5m tall, accompanied by a bronze dagger and traces of another, unidentifiable object. The finds were donated to the Museum of Antiquities in Newcastle.
