Sidgate Roman military base (Newbrough and Fourstones)
Roman military base straddling a ridge east of Sidgate Lane, Newbrough. It encloses a smaller (scheduled) farmstead (NY 86 NE 3). Found through aerial reconnaissance in 1976. A single ditch can be traced, although the north-west corner is beneath Sidgate housing estate and the south-east corner underlies the B6319, 80m west of Red Houses.
Identification as a camp or fort is uncertain and the nature of the entrances is unclear on all four sides. There is no suggestion of 'tutuli' ('tituli'). The plan is in the shape of a parallelogram, probably distorted by its location across the ridge. Dimensions: c.295m by c.170m, covering c.5.1 hectares. It has long been assumed that a fort is located around Newbrough, and this site may represent a form of pre-hadrianic military activity. Further work is necessary to fully understand this site. (see parish file T34) (1)
Trial excavations east of Sidgate Lane at NY 87626768, three trenches cut. Evidence of two episodes of post-Roman ploughing were recovered and the surviving remains of an earlier episode, perhaps related to the crop mark site (fort), were identified. No artifacts were recovered despite the recovery of material during construction of the Sidgate housing estate to the north. (2)
Fieldwalking on the site by M C Bishop yielded no Roman material, despite ploughing down to natural in some areas. (3)
