Newbrough shrunken medieval village (Newbrough and Fourstones)
The earliest record of a settlement at Newbrough was in the 13th century when it is mentioned in the Iter of Wark for 1279. At this time 12 jurors were listed. Some other historic documents show the village has increased in size and in the 1666 Hearth Tax 33 houses were recorded, although this may include houses at Thornton nearby.
