Langley Barony Mine (Haydon)
Lead, barytes, witherite and zinc were mined and processed here in the 19th century. Lead was mined here for hundreds of years, and even in the Roman period, but most of the visible remains here date to the 19th century. This is a Scheduled Monument protected by law. (1-2)
A post medieval lead mine with associated leats, reservoirs, shafts and a dam are visible as earthworks on air photographs centred at NY 8288 6637.
The Langley Barony mines comprise two principal working sites at NY 8306 6657 and NY8261 6599. Spoil heaps and buildings are visible but were mapped as an extent of area. A system of leats, two reservoirs and a dam are also visible.
Later photography indicates possible re-working of the spoil after the 1940s. (3a-b)
