[NY 8195 6777] A camp alongside Stanegate west of Grindon Hill, seen from the air 13th June, 1939, and visited 17th June, 1939, measures 280' from east to west by 240' from north to south, over the rampart centres. In each side there is one gate about 21' wide, covered by a traverse 33' outside the gate. Very poor condition, at best ramparts are about 1' high. (1)(2)(4)

A probable fortlet. (3)

Barely traceable. A superficial depression represents the ditch, and only the east and west gates can be identified as slight causeways. Surveyed at 1/2500. (5)

A consideration of spacing and terrain calls for a fortlet at or close to Grindon Hill. (6)

NY 819678 Roman camp NE of Sandyford Farm. (7a)

A Roman temporary camp is visible as an earthwork on air photographs at NY 8194 6776. The camp is defined by a narrow ditch and measures 77m by 89m. Entrances are visible in the north and east sides. The camp is very denuded by ridge and furrow ploughing on the same alignment. (7b)
