The remains of a typical medieval wayside cross, consisting of socket stone and truncated shaft. See GPs AO.65.157 3 and 4. 'Stob' is dialect for stumps. (2)
As described. The shaft (0.5m high, 0.2m x0.15m) is loose in the socket stone (0.7m square and 0.4m high). Surveyed at 1:10,000. (3)
Stobs Cross. Grade II listed. Remains of a boundary cross, medieval. Sandstone. (4)
On the fragment of the cross shaft are faint traces of two possible cup marks, each about 60mm across. (5)
The site was recorded in a Rock Art survey carried out by the North of the Wall Tynedale Archaeology Group as part of the Beyond the Wall: Edges Green Project. The site was recorded as Stobs Cross. The project recorded two possible cup marks on the north face. The central cup was 0.07m in diameter, 0.01m in depth and was very eroded. The upper cup was 0.04m in diameter, 0.01m in depth and had a very irregular shape. The report concluded that the authenticity as prehistoric markings was not definite (6)
