Coalcleugh Pits (West Allen)

Coal workings. (1)

Coalcleugh Pits (coal), number and precise nature unclear. (1a-b)

An area of post medieval coal workings, two dams and a reservoir are visible as earthworks on air photographs, at NY 8008 4456. The coal workings cover an area of approximately 5.2ha. The coal workings, reservoir and one of the dams are extant on the latest 2001 vertical photography, whilst the dam at NY 7974 4442 appears to have been levelled. A large number of dams associated with the mining complex, are depicted on the 1st edition OS mapping, though these are not visible on the available photography. (1c-d)
