Cultivation terraces and farmstead (Cornhill-on-Tweed)
[Centred at NT 85723836] Earthworks. Cultivation Terraces. (1)(2)
This series of earthworks appears to form a fortified enclosure but to no set plan. (3)
It consists of mounds, terraces, water-filled depressions and, close to the wood, traces of foundations. (4)
Alongside Kippie Hill, is a ditch, at least 15ft wide, with a cutting through the middle. (5)
The site consists of an area of scattered terrace cultivation associated with fragmentary remains of a probable medieval farmstead (the 'traces of foundations' mentioned above) at NT 85913845. The ditch near Kippie Hill, is a dried-up water channel, probably cut to drain the marshy ground in that area. Remains of farmstead resurveyed at 1:2500. (6)
Medieval cultivation terraces and a farmstead are visible as earthworks on air photographs centred at NT 8573 3831. The farmstead, at NT 8591 3846, is formed by a rectilinear platform on which can be seen traces of narrow banks. To the south-east of the farmstead are several cultivation terraces. (7)
