Flint knife (Tarset with Greystead)
'NY 739 912' A bifacially flaked flint dagger of a type found in Beaker contexts found by Mr R Robson near a spring close to Highfield Hope, Tarset. (1)
Mr Robson confirmed the approximate find spot at NY 7390 9121. The dagger, which was a surface find, c.February 1967 is now in the Border Forest Park, Museum, Kielder. (2)
The kite-shaped flint dagger has been reassessed as part of the work for the displays of the Great North Museum. The implement has a well-differentiated blade from the tang zones, with two pairs of pronounced notches on either side where the two zones meet. The dagger is 124.5mm long by 56mm wide and 10mm thick. Only discolouration noted on the dagger is the evidence for an indication of a former haft, though it appears to have been reworked into it's current shape which is unusual when compared to the national corpus of such implements. (3)
The flint dagger from Highfield Hope is classed by Frieman in her national review of Bronze Age daggers as Class 3. This is a compelete flint dagger with tip present. The tang edges are very tapered, and the base end flat. Two pairs of notches are located on the on tang edges. This has been resharpened. (4)
