Round Cairn (Simonburn)

A cairn of loose stones, 16m x 14m diameter and 1.1m maximum height. Resurveyed at 1:2500. See G.P. (2)
Situated at NY 79877105 on a gentle south facing rough pastured slope of King Wanless Green (a shallow east/west valley between King's Crags to the north and Queen's Crags to the south) at about 255m OD are the remains of a round cairn.
It has been severely mutilated by robbing, mainly in the south east quadrant and is partly overgrown by turf and though there is no definite kerb its perimeter is still apparent giving a diameter of 17m north-west/south-east by 15.5m transversely. In the south east it has been levelled to about 1.3m above ground level but around the north-west it is a maximum 1.3m high above this. Its interior seems to be intact. Surveyed at 1:10,000. (3)
NY 7986 7105. Round cairn 120m S of King's Crags. Scheduled RSM No 20977. A cairn of loose stone, partly turfed, is 17m in diameter and up to 1.1m high. The cairn is well preserved although the SE quadrant has been robbed of stone. (4)

Site visited as part of a Farm Environment Plan, where assessed as in a good condition. (6)
The round cairn, as described by the previous Authorities, was seen and mapped from air photographs. It was seen to be slightly longer NE-SW, a length of 17m, and had a width of 15m. (7a)
