Turret 36a (Kennel Crag) (Haydon)
[NY 7931 6915] TURRET [G.S.] (Site of) (1)
Turret 36a is on the summit of Kennel Crags. (2)
It was examined in 1946, and appears to have been put out of commission before the close of the Roman period. (3)
The site is indicated by a slight earthen platform. A branch road from the military way is visible to within a short distance of the platform. Surveyed at 1:2500. (4)

Excavations in 1946 discovered the threshold of the doorway had been raised in Roman times. (6)
Turret 36A was located in 1911 (7b). As mentioned in Authority 3, the turret was excavated in 1946 and found to have narrow walls and a door to the east. Now an irregular platform survives up to 17m NE-SW by 6m transversely and up to 1.1m high at NY 7931 6915. No internal features were recorded and it is partly overlain by Wall tumble. The branch road is now recorded under NE 76 NE 82. (7a)
Turret 36A is visible as an abraided earthwork platform on air photographs taken in 1999 and was mapped as part of the Hadrian's Wall National Mapping Project. (7c)
